PLO Range Viewer tutorial: study PLO, PLO5 and PLO6 preflop ranges

A PLO preflop range holds hundreds of thousands of starting hands. In PLO5 and PLO6 the count runs into millions. A classic preflop chart cannot show that, so the PLO Range Viewer gives you four ways to read one spot: a hand list, a PLO preflop chart, a range comparison and an explanation of each action.

This tutorial walks through every part of the PLO Range Viewer for 4, 5 and 6 card Omaha.

PLO5 and PLO6 solutions were created using proprietary solvers and are not available for download.

Open a PLO sim

Go to My Lobby, pick a PLO, PLO5 or PLO6 sim and press View strategy.

The first time you open the viewer, a short tour of the study screen runs by itself. You can replay it any time from ? at the top right.

The study screen at a glance

• Top: the sim name and format, such as "Heads-up · 100bb deep · No rake · No ante", the four views (Strategy, Matrix, Ranges, Breakdown) and Quick select.
• Game tree navigation bar: the hand so far, one card per decision.
• Middle: the view you picked, with the hand search above it.
• Right: the side panel, with the table, your Trainer record and the range details. The » button folds it away.

Above the view, the spot's name says who acts and what they face, such as "SB first in", with the pot and the SPR beside it.

Move through the game tree

The game tree navigation bar at the top shows the hand one decision at a time. Each card is a seat, with its stack and its actions. The action the line took is filled in its colour, and the card you are on has a gold ring.

• Click an action to play it.
• Click the seat on an earlier card to go back to that decision.
• Start returns to the first decision.
• Hover over an action to preview the next decision before you click. The preview appears at the end of the navigation bar. You can switch Hover preview off in Display settings.

Quick select takes you straight to a named spot. Its Spots tab groups them by situation, such as Open and vs Raise, with one line per seat: "SB first in", "BB vs 3bet" and so on. Press the pin beside the spot name to save it under Pinned. Recent lists the spots you visited.

On a keyboard, ← and → step back and forward along the line, and S jumps to the other player's last decision and back. Press ? for the full list.

Read the strategy

Strategy is where the viewer opens. Each column is one action, with how often the range takes it, the combos behind it and its EV. In the example spot, SB opens to 3bb 75.1% of the time and folds 24.9%.

Each line is one hand class:

• How often: how often this hand takes the action.
• EV: the expected value of the action, in big blinds.
• EV vs best: how much EV the action loses against the hand's best action. 0bb means it is the best action. Use it to see how much a mistake costs.
• Weight and Combos: how much of the hand reaches this spot.

Click a column header to sort by Hand, How often, EV, EV vs best or Weight. Click a hand to open its details: its exact suits, its hand strength, its strategy for every action (how often, EV, EV vs best, combos and weight, with the best action tagged) and example hands.

PLO groups hands that only differ by suits. "×24, 24 suit variants" next to a hand tells you how many hands stand behind the line.

Find any hand: hand search and Filters

The search box sits above the view. Type the cards a hand must hold and the view filters as you type:

• AA: two aces plus any other cards
• AK:xxyy: an ace and a king, double-suited
• 20%: the top 20% of hands by hand strength

The line under the search shows how much of the range your search keeps, such as "Showing 100% of the range: 20,358,520 of 20,358,520 combos". The search stays on when you move to another spot, so you can follow one type of hand through the whole hand. Press Escape to clear it.

Filters picks hands without typing: suits (including exact suit shapes such as 3-2-1), pairs, aces, ranks held, highest card, every card at most, rundowns and hand strength. Hand lists: hide hands under hides hands that take an action less than a set percentage of the time. Totals and the side panel still count them.

PLO preflop chart: the Matrix view

Matrix is the PLO version of a preflop chart. It sorts the whole range into a 13x13 grid by each hand's two highest cards: AK means an ace and a king on top, AA a pair of aces on top.

Click a square to split it by the next cards in those hands. A summary card shows that square's share of the range, its combos, its strategy against the whole range and its EV against folding. All hands or Reset takes you back to the full grid. Hover over a square to see its totals.

Use the controls above the grid to change what it shows:

• Display: Strategy, EV, Frequency or Range. Proportional sizes each square by its number of combos.
• Above the diagonal: where the suited hands sit (Double-suited, Top two suited or No split).
• Suits: Any, Rainbow, Single-suited, Double-suited, Triple-suited, Monotone, or an exact suit shape.

The square you click filters the other views too.

Compare two ranges: Ranges

Ranges puts two players' ranges side by side at the spot. Pick the players under Compare.

For each player you see the range width, how much of the range sits in the top 10% of hands, where half the range lies and the EV from the start of the hand. Key differences lists where the two ranges differ most. Below it, Hand classes splits both ranges by hand strength, suits, connectedness and more.

Why the solver plays it: Breakdown

Breakdown explains one action at a time, such as "Why SB raises to 3bb". Click another action at the top to explain that one.

• What matters most names the three hand features that change the action most, with the numbers.
• Strategy by hand strength shows the action from the strongest 5% of hands to the weakest, as a chart or a table.
• Strategy by hand class splits the action by suits, pairs, connectedness, aces and highest card. The filter button on a row shows only that hand class everywhere in the viewer.

The side panel

On a computer, the side panel sits on the right of every view:

• Table: the seats, stacks, bets and pot at this spot.
• Trainer: your record on this spot and its training pathway, with Drill this spot.
• Hand classes: how the range splits by suits, exact suits, pairs, connectedness, aces, highest card and hand strength. Click a class to show only its hands.
• Ranks held: how often the range holds each rank, or each pair of ranks, and how those hands play.
• EV bands: the range grouped by how much each hand wins or loses compared with folding, in pots.
• Blockers: how each card you hold changes the other player's strategy.

Drill this spot in the GTO Poker Trainer

Share a spot and change the display

Copy link to this spot, at the top right, copies a link to the spot on your screen. Send it to a friend, your coach or your team. Whoever opens it needs an account with access to that sim.

The gear opens Display settings:

• Action colours for every bet size, all-in, check or call and fold, with Reset colours
• Sizes as % of pot, to show bet sizes as a share of the pot instead of big blinds
• Hole card order: high card then suit, or high card only
• Action order: most aggressive action on the right or on the left
• Hover preview on or off

The PLO Range Viewer on your phone

On a phone the viewer shows one action at a time. Tap the action tabs above the list to switch, and tap ▾ on a hand to see its weight, combos and EV for each action. The four views sit in the bar at the bottom, with More for your Trainer record and Drill this spot. The menu at the top right holds Quick select, Copy link, Display settings, Help and the tours.

Prefer the old PLO viewer?

The old viewer, with its sunburst chart, is still there. Open Display settings, go to Other settings and choose Old viewer. Your browser stays on the old viewer until you switch back in its settings.

What do double-suited and triple-suited mean in PLO?

A double-suited hand has two suited groups, such as two hearts and two spades. A triple-suited hand has three suited pairs, which is only possible with six cards. Use Filters or the Matrix Suits control to show only these hands.

Can I download PLO preflop ranges?

For 4 card PLO, yes. PLO preflop ranges are available as MonkerViewer range files, and subscribers get them at half price. PLO5 and PLO6 solutions are not available for download: you study them in the PLO Range Viewer.
